Both plants Ventilago maderspatana Gaertn. and Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz) Willd. were utilized for cough and cold treatment in Titupati district of Andhra Pradesh, India. This study was aimed at investigating anti-asthmatic property of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of stem of Ventilago maderspatana Gaertn and stembark of Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz) Willd. obtained by maceration and extraction. Preliminary phytochemical analysis was carried out for all extracts. Both plants were found to contain different phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, glycosides, steroids and sterols, saponins, flavonoids, carbohydrates and tri-terpenoids and showed the absence of amino acids, proteins and acidic compounds. Acute toxicity studies were carried out and the extracts were found to be safe till 2000 mg/kg b.w. in female balb/c mice. 1/10th and 1/20th dose were selected as per OECD (423). In-vivo anti-asthmatic studies were carried out in ova albumin induced asthmatic animal model. Histo-pathological study on lung tissue was carried out. The study justified the use of stem of Ventilago maderspatana Gaertn and stem bark of Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz) Willd. in the management of asthma in Indian folk medicine. It was determined from the stem of Ventilago maderspatana Gaertn stem bark of Z. xylopyrus (Retz) Willd. for the first time.
